First published in New World Writing on 5 February 2022, these five pieces arose in various ways and represent different approaches

to creative translation. Regardless of those differences, however, each explores philosophical concepts in a grounded manner. 'The

Shuōhuà of the Barn Owl; or, The Barn Owl concerning black roses, mocking precious things and libelling fabulous people' is a bit of

a personal favourite – it proceeded from a challenge to "write an Aesop" and an initial reticence to so forcibly direct the creative

process which was, serendipitously, followed a day later by a period of flow that produced the work (life is like that on occasions).
